Maori-dominated schools have so far stayed away from the Government’s plan to overhaul the school system by paying more for change principals and lead teachers.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says 11 communities of schools totalling 38,000 students at both primary and secondary levels have been approved for the scheme, and other expressions of interest are being considered.

She says they don’t include Maori medium schools or any with a high percentage of Maori students.

The Post Primary Teachers Association has backed the scheme, but NZEI Te Riu Roa remains opposed because members say the resources could be better used elsewhere.
