Kia ora,

Ko Jasmine Rolton teenei.  He Pouako Toa ia.

What makes you a successful teacher of Māori children?

Repetition /Modelling

‘Reciprocal Teaching by Marie Kelly.

In (my) reading programme – do reciprocal reading – which works well because

  • Develops confidence
  • Empowers attitude to reading – the children get to be the ‘leader’
  • Develops met cognitive (Spelling?) skills: children become responsive readers and thinkers

Opportunities for Role Play and Modelling (which links directly to the Māori Learning Style.)

Use karakia to start the day

Promote and use Māori language during the day.

Te Ara Reo Māori strengthened my delivery and use (understanding) in the classroom.

Reading Tutors:

Children from my room go to another classroom 4X’s a week – to a Year 2-3 class. Example of Tuakana/ Teina learning.

Children also support their own classmates, especially those who are less able.

I  encouraged the children to prepare a more in-depth mihimihi / pepeha as an introduction to their Putake Kōrero speech (A local Southland schools competition). Through this activity the children and I were able to make connections. It was not enough (in my mind) for the children to write the basic mihi, I directed them to extend their own whanau knowledge. (And it worked)

I am working a lot with Co-operative Learning in New Zealand Schools (Don Brown & Charlotte Thomson)

  • Provides a platform for the children’s learning
  • They are not individuals they belong to a group
  • Pair working

Safer oral language opportunities (Get over the ‘whakama’

    Listening skills
  • Writing skills
  • Sharing ideas

I hold everyone’s culture in high regard, valuing who we are and where we come from.

Jasmine Rolton
